Bhubaneswar, Jan 21: A total of 12 commandos of National Security Guard (NSG) will reach Bhubaneswar on January 23 who will be deployed around Mahatma Gandhi Marg to keep vigil during Republic Day parade.
As the intelligence agencies have warned that ahead of the Republic Day celebrations Pakistan-based terror groups could sneak into the country to carry out attacks in major Indian cities. These commandos have been trained to effectively tackle terrorists and other emerging threats during the entire parade.
A letter from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bhubaneswar sent to the Superintending Engineer, Central Circle, Nirman Soudha here on January 19 have stated that “During Republic Day-2018, 12 commandos of NSG will be undertaking precautionary deployment to cater for any unforeseen contingency at Bhubaneswar from January 23 to January 27”.
During their five-day stay, it has requested the concerned departments for providing accommodation to 12 commandos at State Guest House here. Six double rooms are sought for the commandos to stay.
Earlier, Odisha police used to deploy state’s specialised wings such as the Special Operation Group (SOG), Special Tactical Unit (STU), Odisha Swift Action Force (OSAF) and Odisha Rapid Action Force during Independence Day or Republic Day.
But for the first time, these National terror strike forces will be deployed at the vulnerable locations around Gandhi Marg. The NSG personnel are expected to be on their toes to ensure safe Republic Day celebrations.
After their reach in Bhubaneswar, NSG commandos will be briefed about the route maps, the traffic, the buildings nearby, and the security cover across the Secretariat and Gandhi Marg, Senior Police sources said.
